In a perverse sort of way I enjoyed working on all the wards, of course the experience was dictated more by the personality of the staff on the ward, than the type of patient. In the main, great staff, good atmosphere the long shifts seemed that much shorter, I recall most of all that Ward 6 was one of the less popular wards in as much as the TB veranda. This consisted of a number of beds outside on the open site, windows open regardless of the weather, (this was par for the treatment in those days) Winter time top coat under nursing coat, sleet ,snow freezing cold, look into the dormitory through the windows,it was like another world, the charge nurse and deputy sat in front of a great ragi...

Hi Dave, Just called by ,as you do , and having found this fascinating website plus being in full agreement with your sentiments of recording snippets of St Edwards life, as was, would like to add my comments on a few of the previously covered topics.
Proctors buses , that item brought back so many memories , how very real the service and the condition of the coaches themselves, I was there in the mid 1950s, and it appears things had not changed in later years, the down side to the bus being late through snow, breakdowns etc, was that if you had not signed on for duty by 7.0 am, the chief would have drawn a line across signed it and closed the book, meaning that however you got to work even walking, you...

My favourite ward was Ward 5. Who could forget Ted Lubacz? I remember a patient coming through the door and, on seeing Ted, shouting "Good God". "No" Ted replied, "but you are very close!". Does anyone remember 'Cats Squirrel' the Group made up of those exellent guitarists Dave Poynton, the Jones brothers and a beautiful little blonde lady. If only we'd had 'Britains Got Talent' then.

I received this email today, can anyone help?
Dear Sir, Would any of your members have any knowledge to the former electric asylum railway? It was built during the construction of the asylum and closed during the 1950's. Lancashire hospitals such as Whittingham and Calderstones both operated their own railway as did High Royds (Menston), Hellingley and the Epsom 'cluster' Regards Mark |

Hi Linda, I remember some of the old Sisters being very particular about how the beds were made up, all the wheels had to point in the same direction and the opening on the pillow case always had to face away from the door so it couldn't be seen when anyone walked into the room. There was one Sister, I think she was on ward 8 at Chedd, if she ever walked into a Dormitory and saw one of the counterpains was a differevt colour from the rest, she would strip the bedding off all the beds and you would have to make them all up again properly. All the corners had to be the same angle as well.
I saw Sister Lehmann in Newcastle the other day and had a long chat with her, she doesn't look a day older! I told her about the site b

Reading obout the buses to Cheddleton reminded me of the times i was reliant on the Beresfords buses from longton , they frequently didn't turn up then I was reliant on the papermill bus which caused me to be 30 min late , my charge nurse at that time then wouldn,t allow me a meal break !!, on one occasion I got on in longton next to the fire station and the driver chesney told me to "watch your step " as I looked down there was a panel missing from the floor exposing the prop shaft and road for about 5 ft of the front of the bus, on reflection the oddest thing was that I was not surprised or particularly bothered, anybody who had to use these buses soon got used to this kind of carry on. Oh how I wished i had the...

John Mc Carron just sent me this photo of the hospital football team after winning the Fred Wright trophy in the late 80's.
Hi Dave Myself, Dave Bloor, Chris Timmis and Andy Willshaw are on there. There were one or two "outsiders" in the team too. Kozzie was our manager and as you no doubt know sadly passed away whilst playing for the team a few years after this. John.
I also recognise Lee Tatton, Tim Cawley, Carl Watkins and Stuart Fisher. I'm racking my brain for the other names. If anyone has any more team photo's, you can either post them on here as an attachment (650 pixels wide preferably), or send them to me by email and I will do a special page on the ma...

Ayup Gary, good to hear from you too! I have often wnodered what the wards look like now, I called through the old grounds on my way back to Sheffield in may and it was idd to see loads of people I didn't know (I was only there for five years but it felt like a longer time)the place looked clean but lacking life !! I cannot look at what they have done to the football pitch I would rather they put a housing estate on it than a Rugby pitch !! Hope you are well we will have to meet up sometime when I am there again, (what ever happened to Mick and Glen owen They used to organise all events didnt they ?) say hullo to Neil from me. Tom |

Thanks for that. I have an autograph book with a lock of Alan Salt's hair in it!! He wrote and I quote - You asked me for something original, something from inside my head, and as I have nothing inside it, here is something from outside instead!! |

| I remember Alan Salt, retiring off night duty in about 1988, I have seen him out and about shopping in Newcastle quite often, no idea about the others. |

Very interesting to pick up this site. I was at SEH from 1972 until 1980 and trained with Ian Wain, Cynthia Priestman etc. Moved to Kidderminster and Dudley as a CPN and the into education as a Principal Lecturer at Wolverhampton University along with Lyn Edwards and Tim Cawley, both of whom are held in very high regard in the School of Health.
As many people have said my experiences at SE are very varied. Funny how John Fleming keeps coming up. Certainly one of the best care of the elderly nurses I have ever met. Could also mention Dave Sheldon, Dave Tavinder, Dennis Bairstow. Some I won't mention who were certainly in need of more care than many of the patients !
Best Wishes,
Matt |

| Does anyone know what happened to John Davey and Alan Salt? I believe John Davey was born in a house on Villa Road and he eventually became Nursing Officer but I have lost track of what happened to him. Also Alan Salt, Phil Simpson and Denis Bairstow? |

My Mum, Averil Anne Jones nee Arrowsmith, grew up in the grounds of the hospital. Her parents both worked in the hospital and they lived in a house within the grounds. Mam said she and her brother only had to leave for school and used to use the hospital shop and cinema. They had free run of the grounds but were not supposed to enter the wards without their parents. During the second world war her and her brother had to go to the main hospital during air raids and shelter in the underground boiler room. Mam went into nursing but not psychiatric although I believe her brother did follow their parents into working at the hospital. I think my great Grandfather may also have worked there. A few years ago I managed to locate...

I started on Ward 19 as a cadet and Sister McGwill frightened me (and most other people) witless. She even hit me with the porridge ladle because she was late and I had the audacity to start to dish out the breakfast!! Jessie Apanasiewicz (I think that is how you spell it) was Staff Nurse at the time. 1968 was the year!! Later when I was a student on Ward 19 Brenda Rushton, who was on ward 20, and I got into trouble for playing a joke. Afer Xmas I took 19's Xmas tree up in the lift to Ward 20 and dumped it there. Brenda returned it. It must have gone up and down in the lift 10 times before our shift ended. We got told off by Miss Williams because all the pine needles had shed all over the place!...

I remember Dr Hutch Pat, you could tell what sort of mood he was in by the colour of his tie, if he had a bright coloured tie, you were O.K. If it was a dark colour you steered well clear of him! |

Hi with regards the cricket at St Ed's as a student nurse there between 75 and 79 we played for the patients team and used to travel to other hospitals , one team we played was at chester (I think it was called dever) and the organiser was Danny Williams who loved all sport , (especially the rugby), traditionally we had lunch with the opposition and then had a "friendly " on this occasion we lost ! and I was sent on the coach coming home to suggest to Danny that we perhaps could stop for a beer , I was met with total silence and a very angry Danny staring through me as though I had seriously offended him. I was later told that Danny did not like to lose and often would not allow a drink on the return tr...
